Jesse Gutierrez Galindo, 88, was called home by the Lord on May 29, 2016, while surrounded by family. He was a loving -and very proud- father, grandfather (Pepa), great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. The eldest of 11 siblings born to Raul and Juanita Galindo, Jesse grew up in San Antonio. He joined the Army and served in World War II. In April 1946, he married Janie Marichalar, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage before she passed in 1996. The pair now dance again in heaven. Jesse worked at Kelly AFB for 36 years before retiring in 1983 as an aircraft production supervisor, a position that suited his reputation for being mechanically inclined and regularly being called to fix things. He was active in the community, serving as president of the St. Stephen’s Catholic Church Men’s Club and as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Jesse also loved sports. He played in a city baseball league in the 1960s and 1970s, he coached Catholic Youth Organization baseball and basketball teams, including those on which his three sons played and brought home championships. He also served as president of the central CYO division. Jesse and Janie traveled with their children and grandchildren to locations in the United States, Mexico and Canada. He was known to be strict at times and to stress higher education to his children, but Jesse had a lighter side. He had a quick wit and he enjoyed dancing, casino gambling and watching the San Antonio Spurs, the Dallas Cowboys, and UT sports. He frequently attended his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, birthday parties, family gatherings and graduations. He lived to attend the weddings of two grandchildren and to hold two great-grandchildren. He is survived by a daughter, Yolanda: sons Jesse Jr. (Diana), Jerry (Susan), and Anthony (Sylvia); six grandchildren, Micah (Janel), Jeremy, Aaron, Rachel (Eric), Alissa and Derrick (Jenny); two great grandchildren, Judah Luke, and Chariss; sisters Janie and Esmeralda (Johnny); brothers Carlos, Raul Jr. (Mary Lou), Guadalupe (Diana), Rudy, Roger (Yolanda): and numerous nieces, and nephews, in-laws and friends, especially Manuel and Alice. The family thanks providers Lori and Sally and their staff for their care and compassion. Besides his wife and parents, Jesse was preceded in death by siblings Margaret, Gloria and Emilio, and several other relatives. His family and friends will miss him dearly, but cherish memories with him and carry on his love of family and life. A visitation will be held on Sunday June 5, 2016 at Roy Akers Funeral Home from 5-9 pm with a rosary at 7pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday June 6, 2016 at St. Stephen Catholic Church at 12pm. Interment will follow at San Fernando Cemetery II.
