Born on February 7, 1943, in New York City, Jay was the son of Major General Andrew J. Evans Jr. and Claire Bickerton Evans. Jay was the first of four children; including one brother and two sisters.
Being in a military family, Jay had the opportunity to see and live in many parts of the world. Jay attended Madrid High School where he was a successful tennis player and formed many long-standing relationships, including life-long friend John (Randy) Torbet. After graduating from Madrid High School in 1961, Jay took his tennis and social skills from Madrid, Spain, to San Antonio, Texas where he attended Trinity University and was a member of the Trinity Tigers tennis team.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science in business administration and a Master of Science in health care administration, both from Trinity University, Jay embarked on a successful career in hospital administration. He began his career in various positions starting with Humana, Inc., and subsequently became regional vice president of Brookwood Health Services. He then worked as senior vice president of the Hospital Management Association, COO of American Healthcare Management, Inc., administrator and executive director of Alamo City Medical Group & Gonzaba Medical Group, and regional chief executive officer of IPC Healthcare before starting his own practice management consulting company.
In his career, Jay displayed a tireless work ethic and was proud of his ability to develop successful hospitals, medical businesses, and business relationships which were most important to him. As a respected voice in his field, Jay wrote for several medical magazines and was civically active with the Learning Disabilities Association of America, the Area Health Education Center, the Mental Health Association, the Chamber of Commerce, and the American Heart Association.
Most important to Jay was his family. He married Georgianna LeGrand on May 20, 1972, had daughter Jena in 1973, daughter Ashley in 1977, and son Andrew in 1979. Throughout his life, Jay demonstrated in many ways how to be a spouse, father, and a friend through steadfast devotion, strong protection, being a shoulder when needed while also knowing how to kick you into gear, celebrating accomplishments, persevere during challenging times and always with the greatest wit and humor. Becoming a genuine best friend to each of his children is something he was most proud of. After Georgianna passed in 2016, Jay would go on to find another great love and married Deborah Levi Lane on July 4, 2018 and gained another son, Eric Lane, whom he deeply loved and would spend his remaining years with.
Jay’s passing marks the end of a remarkable journey, one filled with laughter, purpose, determination, deep connections, and a profound love for those he held dear. Throughout his life, Jay demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his family and helping those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of heart, passion, and humor.
