Janice Mason, animal lover, cat whisperer, devoted mother, loving wife, quirky friend, and neighbor died on 14 January in Ashburn, Virginia. Jan was born in Quincy, Illinois to Emma and Bill Jansen in 1946. A long-time resident of the city, she considered San Antonio her home attending Alamo Heights High School in 1964, graduating with a B.A. and M.A. in Sociology from Incarnate Word College and Trinity University respectively. She also received a master’s in library science from The University of Texas in Austin.
A career librarian, she served as medical librarian at Ft Sam Houston’s Institute for Surgical Research for over twenty years. Supporting the research and care of burn patients became her professional passion and the people of ISR, her closest friends. It was there that she met and later married her best friend, A. D. (Dick) Mason.
Jan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dick Mason and her parents, Bill and Emma Jansen. She is survived by her daughter Pamela - sisters Mary and Barbara - her brother Will, niece Stephanie, and nephew Clint.
At heart a Texan, Jan moved in 2021 to Virginia to be near her daughter.
She will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, Tx 78218 in San Antonio on Tuesday, May 7th at 1100.
