James “Jim” Miller Van Winkle, age 88, went to be with the Lord, on November 23, 2012 in San Antonio, TX. He was born on January 2, 1924 in Evansville, IN to James & Norma Van Winkle. He was a U. S. Army Veteran serving in WWII. Jim graduated from Ohio State University. He worked as a Pharmacist all his life at numerous pharmacies, primarily Hightower Pharmacy & Seiberts Pharmacy, in which he was the owner of both. He was also a member of Shearer Hills Baptist Church and he was on the Board of Managers at University Hospital for several years. He received an honorary award for his services to South San Antonio and the city which was awarded by Frank Tejada.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Emma G. Van Winkle; 6 children, Laura Chapman & husband Ken, Kurt Van Winkle & wife Lupe, Leslie Van Winkle & wife Rachel, Ellen Van Winkle Smith, Ann Van Winkle Gilcrease and Bruce Van Winkle; grandchildren, Kendra Chapman, Kyra Chapman, Shawn Van Winkle, Kim Van Winkle, Sara Van Winkle, Jacqueline Van Winkle Taylor, Jessica Van Winkle; Brian Smith, Shea Duke, Kami Smith, Reid Smith and Ashley Gilcrease Sefcik; 8 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m., Tuesday, November 27, 2012 with the Memorial Service to be a 3 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
