Col. (Ret) James Loy Long, Age 83, died December 13, 2012 . He is survived by his wife Doris, a son Joseph and his wife Mary Jane; a daughter Jane and her husband Chris Slattery; two granddaughters Jennifer and Megan Slattery; his brother James Edward Long; and his sister Mary Southard. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the mother of his children, Bessie F. Long. James was a graduate of New Mexico State University and earned a MBA from George Washington University. He attended numerous military schools including the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. After his retirement in 1980, he worked for Datapoint/Intelogic Trace until 1995.He was a volunteer at the Institute of Texas Cultures, coordinator for the Citizens on Patrol of Northern Hills, volunteer for the San Antonio Police Department, served as a mentor at Northern Hills Elementary and was a member of the Northern Hills Homeowners Executive Council. Visitation will take place on Thursday, December 20, 2012 from 5-7pm at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas, 78218. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 am on Friday, December 21, 2012 at St. Helena Catholic Church, 14714 Edgemont, San Antonio, Texas, 78247 with a funeral mass to follow at 10 am. Burial will take place at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the charity of your choice.
