Houchi was born in Ping Tung, Taiwan on March 7, 1936 as the oldest brother of 5 siblings. He graduated from National Taiwan University and earned a PhD in Anatomy from the University of Louisville. He moved to UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, where he was a Professor of Anatomy for over 40 years, training an entire generation of doctors.
From his medical research, Hou Chi developed his own form of acupuncture based on anatomical principles. He wrote three books on this subject, taught a number of students, and helped relieve pain in thousands of people. He was a founding member of the Texas Acupuncture Board.
Houchi was an avid Rotarian, swimmer and fisherman, loved reading the news, watching documentaries and listening to classical music. He traveled extensively and loved volunteering and making cross-cultural connections. He cared deeply about the Taiwanese community and his family.
He is survived by his only love and wife, Elizabeth, his brothers Yu Fu (Ching) and Walter (Kim), his sons Ben (Rebecca) and Joeming (Teresa), four grandchildren and one-great grandchild.
