Herbert was born in Sparenberg, Texas on May 20, 1933 to Erich and Selma Kunkel. After finishing grades one through eight in the Sparenberg community, he attended Concordia Lutheran High School in Austin. He then went on to graduate from Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska.
Herbert played both football and softball in his younger years. He even pitched on a summer softball league in Lamesa. He used his gifts and talents for the glory of God by playing the organ in church and directing choirs.
Herbert was an avid teacher. He was a principal at a Lutheran parochial school in San Antonio. He taught English at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio, elementary and junior high school classes in Lamesa as well as GED classes to prison inmates in Marlin and Amarillo.
After retiring from teaching, Herbert began his “cooking” career and began offering catering services to the general public in 1981. Herbert opened up Herb’s Bar-B-Que on February 26, 1991 in Lamesa. Herbert was well known for his barbecue and barbecue sauce in the surrounding Texas counties and beyond. Many will remember him as “Herb.”
Herbert is survived by his three children, Christopher (Mary) Kunkel of Shreveport, Louisiana; Matthew (Raquel) Kunkel of San Antonio, and Susan Crossman of Abilene; two sisters, Margie Ammons of Amarillo and Audrey (Alan) Smith of Victoria;Erich and Selma Kunkel A graveside service will be held at the Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Sparenberg, Texas at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2017. The public is invited.
The family of Herbert Lee Kunkel wishes to thank Ethelyn Miller with Medical Team, Mindy Paulma and Amy Mercader at Evening Sun Care Home, and Randy McMeans, RN with Amed Community Hospice in San Antonio.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the family or to be given to a non profit organization for children/after school programs/education, etc. The family has not had time to decide which organization.
