Henry Lee Zumwalt, born July 1, 1936, passed away in his ranch truck under a group of his favorite shade trees Saturday, August 20, 2022, at the age of 86 years old. The man from Medina, Texas-who had moved more earth than anyone could possibly measurc-came to rest in the countryside of Mico, without a doctor or hospital in sight, just the way he wanted to go.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Fellers; father, William Zumwalt; mother,Beulah (Miller) Zumwalt; and daughters, Debbie and Linda Zumwalt.
Henry attended Medina School. His legacy of hard work began early in life. By the age of 8,he was contributing to the family working as a paper boy in the mornings and a shoeshine boy at a barber shop during the day. At age 11, Henry bought a Model A so he could drive to surrounding farms and ranches to plow fields and haul hay. All while still in school, Henry worked at a dehydrating plant, rock crusher, and butcher shop. He also drove trucks and ran a taxi service out of the Model A.
After graduation, Henry joined the Navy as a submariner to see the world. He served as an electrician and was recruited to play in the Navy's baseball league. After his service, he worked as a truck driver before taking a job working with computers for Western Union. Unsatisfied with a short eight-hour workday, Henry began clearing land as a contractor on the side.
His contracting work evolved into H.L.Zumwalt Construction, formally incorporated in 1978.Henry ultimately established an ecosystem of complementary companies-crushing rock, mixing asphalt, prepping sites, constructing buildings, and paving countless miles of roads and highways. Henry's companies created vast infrastructure and provided income to hundreds of people every week.
He sensed how people relied on him. At auctions, he was known to win items only to donate them back to be auctioned again. He quietly covered wedding, quinceañera, and funeral costs. Henry was habitually generous to organizations and individuals. He loved ranching and was a devoted steward of the land as well.
Henry is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bonnie; sons, Daryl (Shawn) Zumwalt and Brandon (Nanda) Zumwalt; grandchildren, Dawson Zumwalt, Mason Zumwalt, Taylore Hansmann, and Cortni Hansmann; sister, Billy Lou Bowman; niece, Nancy (Jesse) Griffin; nephew, Bud (Angie) Bowman; and brother-in-law,Gary(Michael Simon)Cox.
