Helena “Sandie” Prado Zimmerman, age 60, of San Antonio, Texas passed away on March 12, 2019, after an extremely well-fought battle with cervical cancer. Helena was a beloved wife, mother, and friend that brought joy to those who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
Born in San Antonio, Texas on June 12, 1958, Helena spent much of her childhood overseas, at various military bases, before returning to San Antonio. She was a graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School, where she enjoyed her time playing clarinet in the marching band. Helena spent a number of years working and raising a family in the Austin area before again returning to San Antonio with her husband.
Helena loved some of the better things in life: UT and Dallas Cowboy football, traveling, and spending time with her extended family and “grandpuppies.” She loved her job, at Southwest Airlines, and traveled as frequently as possible. She was funny, fun, and a blast to be around – even as her condition continued to deteriorate.
Helena was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Prado. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Zimmerman; her children, Joshua Zimmerman (and fiancée Maria Scognamiglio), Jakob Zimmerman (and girlfriend Amanda Matocha), and Jessica Zimmerman-Zikeli (and wife Mallory Zikeli); her father, Lee Prado; 6 siblings; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Shumway and the many amazing nurses and staff at Texas Oncology, Nurse Liz and the fine folks at River City Hospice, and the Happy Living Care Home for all of their assistance during the final year of Helena’s life.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 17th at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel from 5:30-9:00 pm with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 pm. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 18th at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 4411 Moana Dr; San Antonio, Texas 78218.
