Helen Effie Miller Duncan, age 96, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2013 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born June 3, 1916, in Wood River, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Clarence LuTrell and Alice Mae Rebecca Martin Miller. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was always very proud of her children and grandchildren.
Helen worked as a secretary in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where she met her husband, Sterling Lee Duncan. They married in 1942. Children were always a priority for Helen, and she helped in various capacities as a Scout leader, church leader, crossing guard, school volunteer, church day-care worker, and Edison High School PTA president. She was an accomplished writer, had many articles published, and had the opportunity to take writing courses which she thoroughly enjoyed. She also enjoyed sewing, square dancing and was a big Spurs fan. Helen enjoyed traveling and was able to visit a number of places tied to her family history including Ohio, Colorado, and Alaska. She was active in her church, Los Angeles Heights United Methodist, for many years, heading committees and singing in the choir. Helen was also treasurer of the United Methodist Women’s Club for 40 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, C.L. Miller, and her husband of 40 years, Sterling. She is survived by her children: Alice Isabel (John) Bridges of Lonoke, Arkansas; David Andrew (Diana Rangel) Duncan of San Antonio, Texas; and Donna Irene (Greg) Norris of Spring Branch, Texas; grandchildren: Matthew (Jessica) Bridges, Michael (Katie) Bridges, Michelle Bridges, Toni (Kevin) White, Sean (Lucy) Duncan, Brenda Michelle (Justin) Lehmann, and Carole Elaine Norris; and 6 great-grandchildren with one due in June. Services will be held on Friday March 8, 2013 at 9:00 A.M. at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with visitation one hour prior to services. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
