Harold “Joe” Linhart Beatty was born to the late Spurgeon and Florence Linhart Beatty on October 7, 1936, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The youngest of six children who lost his father at the age of six, Joe grew up in North Bessemer, Pennsylvania, playing baseball, spending time with his family and participating in many church activities. Following his graduation from Penn Hills High School, he attended St. Paul Bible College in Minnesota and received a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical and Theological Studies in 1961. He also received a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from St. Cloud University.
Joe met Annette Ruth Nyberg at St. Paul Bible College, and they were united in marriage on August 25, 1961. He was ordained by the Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination in 1964. His 45-year ministry began in Minnesota, pastoring churches in Holdingford, Becker and Maplewood, and continued as he moved to Pasadena, Texas, and finally San Antonio, where he retired.
In college, Joe enjoyed singing in the choir, playing basketball and making lifelong friends. Throughout his life, he was an avid golfer who loved the challenge of a crossword puzzle. He played piano by ear and cherished the times he could join with friends around the piano singing gospel music.
He was known for his competitive spirit, and loved playing board games and croquet with his grandchildren in his older years.
Joe went to be with his Savior on Thursday, November 26, 2020, at Sonterra Health Center in San Antonio, Texas, during his rehabilitation from back surgery. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 60 years, Annette; his children, Beth Webb and husband, Michael, and Patricia Gonzalez and husband, Omar; his six grandchildren, Emily, Andrew, Alex, Analise, Zachary, and Riley; and sister, Lila Roberts. In death, he was preceded by brother Rick Beatty, sisters Helen Deem, Dorothy Pivik, Betty Clawson, and grandson, Tyler McCollum.
His devotion to the ministry and his Christian faith will forever remain in the lives of all who knew him. A Celebration of Life service in his memory will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2020, at 1 p.m. CT, at the Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 E., San Antonio, Texas. Masks and social distancing will be required to respect the safety of all attendees.
