

Gumercindo G. Alvarado, Jr., lifelong resident of San Antonio, Texas passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at age 89. He was born on April 14, 1933, to parents, Aurora Gomez, and Gumercindo Alvarado, Sr.
After graduating from Sydney Lanier High School, May 28, 1951, he joined the United States Marine Corp July 18, 1951. He left the States for Korea on February 1, 1952, and was assigned to FOX-2-7, 1st Marine Div. On May 28, 1952, he was wounded in action and was awarded a Purple Heart. After he was discharged from the military, he returned to San Antonio and worked at Kelly Air Force Base until his retirement in 1989. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1978. After his retirement, Gume went on to work with special needs children at Rhodes Middle School. Gume enjoyed watching and playing sports. He was an avid bowler and the patriarch of the Alvarado bowling dynasty. He bowled in leagues and tournaments with his two sons. He also pitched for the B-52 Kits Slow-Pitch softball team, and they won the Kelly Civilian Slow-pitch Softball League title in 1962. He was the biggest Dallas Cowboys fan and proud Spurs season ticket holder.
He was preceded in death by, his parents, Aurora and Gumercindo Sr.; his wife, Tillie Vidalez Alvarado; children, JoAnn Alvarado, and Michael Alvarado. Gumercindo is survived by the mother of his children, Mary L. Alvarado; his daughter, Rose Marie Cruz; sons, John Edward Alvarado, Stanley L. Alvarado (Roxana); grandchildren, Angela Alvarado, Andrea Moralez (Jose), Amanda Myhrberg (Dan), Ryan Cruz, Michelle Alvarado, Michael Alvarado, Jason Cruz; three great-grandchildren; Aidan Livar, Nadia Lira, Nicholas Lira; three siblings, Carlos Alvarado, Sr. (Minnie), Maria Aurora Cuellar, and Richard J. Alvarado, Sr.
The family will receive guests from 6:00p.m. - 7:00p.m., on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough.
