Guillermo Espinosa, affectionately known as "Memo" or "Profe Memo," passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on February 10, 1940, in Mexico City, Mexico, Memo lived a vibrant and impactful 84 years.
Memo was predeceased by his cherished wife of 50 years, Gloria D. Espinosa, on February 6, 2024, and his beloved firstborn daughter, Adriana Espinosa, on September 14, 2002. He is survived by his loving daughter, Erika Espinosa, and his sister, Maria del Carmen Moreno Espinosa.
Memo's passion for soccer defined much of his life. His professional playing career saw him representing teams both in the United States and Mexico. In the US, he played for the Hawaii team, San Antonio Thunder (NASL), Oakland Astros, Los Angeles Toros (NPSL), and the USA National Team in the Kennedy Cup. In Mexico, he played for Texcoco, Atlante, Necaxa, and the Youth National Team.
His transition from player to coach allowed him to share his expertise and love for the game. In Mexico, he coached Coyotes Neza, Necaxa, Atlante, and Atletico Espanol in the first division. In the US, his coaching roles included assistant coach at the University of the Incarnate Word and head coach positions for the San Antonio Pumas, San Antonio Generals, San Antonio College, and many more. His influence extended to the Olympic Development Program, shaping the futures of many young athletes.
Memo also served in the Mexican Navy as a skilled frogman, welding ships. Beyond his professional achievements, Memo was devoted to his family, soccer, youth, and animals. He dedicated countless hours to mentoring young soccer players and bringing professional soccer to San Antonio in the 80s and 90s. His love for animals was evident in his care for stray dogs, cats, deer, raccoons, possums, and even skunks. Memo also had a love of cars that started at a young age. He could look at any classic vehicle and tell you the make, model, and any distinct features it possessed. He could rebuild a motor, paint a vehicle, and redo upholstery.
As an author, Memo wrote a book on coaching and training soccer players, leaving a lasting legacy in the soccer community. Known for his quick wit and humor, Memo never met a stranger and had a nickname for everyone. His warmth and generosity touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed.

Memo's life was filled with love, laughter, and a deep sense of purpose. Though he missed his wife Gloria every day after her passing, we find solace in knowing they are reunited with their daughter Adriana, laughing and enjoying each other’s company once again. Guillermo Espinosa's legacy of dedication to soccer, youth, and animals will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
