Griffin L. Jones was ushered into the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ, whom he loved and served faithfully, on December 20, 2010. He was born December 7, 1925, in Slaton, Texas, and is survived by his wife of 63 years, Melvis Corzine Jones. Together, they have invested 53 years teaching Sunday School classes, influencing thousands of children with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In addition, “Brother Jones” served in independent, fundamental Baptist churches as an ordained deacon and personally led many people to receive Christ as their Savior. He loved his nation and is a part of America’s “greatest generation,” having served in the U.S. Navy for 33 months in the South Pacific during World War 2. He achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer as a plane captain on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Shipley Bay. He earned a Master’s Degree from Trinity University and worked as a chemist and chemical engineer for the United States Civil Service for just over 40 years, primarily at Kelly AFB. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie Day and Mary Moffitt Jones, as well as brothers Jessie and George Jones, and sisters, Beulah Stanley, Amber Roberts, Amy Bischel, and Gail Meyers. He is survived by his daughter, Cathy Jones Elliott and husband Doug; son, Dr. Griffin G. Jones and wife, Donna; grandchildren, Ryon Elliott and Erin Elliott Howard , Shawn Jones Crane and Cherith Jones, and great-grandaughter, Eliana Crane; sisters, Jane Lopez and Hazel Link; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 2, 2011, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a memorial service on Monday, January 3, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Huisache Avenue Baptist Church.
