Gloria Jennell Lang Jones passed away November 28, 2019 at the age of 73. She was born in Tyler, Texas, on September 11, 1946, the firstborn daughter of Harold Wendell Lang, Sr. and Earlean Anderson Lang. Gloria and her husband, Jim Eckford Jones, were married for 49 years. Dr. Jones leaves behind one daughter, Matari Simone Jones Gunter. Her only son, Jibri Omari Jones, preceded her in death. Dr. Jones is survived by her mother, Earlean Mitchell, husband Jim, two grandchildren, Theodore Henry Gunter and Alexander James Gunter, son-in-law, Will Gunter, Jr., two sisters, Linda Lang Yates and LePaula Lang Jarmon and a brother, Harold Wendell Lang, Jr. She also is survived by her niece Kisha Yates, her nephew Jabari Yates and her great niece Aneesa Harper in addition to dozens of aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives. Dr. Jones was a retired educator with an extensive career as a teacher, high school counselor, vocational counselor, and licensed professional counselor with San Antonio ISD, Edgewood ISD, Northside ISD, and Judson ISD. At Northside’s John Jay High School, she was the district’s first African American vocational counselor. In 2002, she earned a doctorate in education from Texas A&M Kingsville. In 2006, Dr. Jones retired as a Full Professor from San Antonio College culminating an education career that spanned nearly 35 years. Dr. Jones was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Phi Delta Kappa, Delta Kappa Gamma and Jack and Jill of America. She also loved to sew and read. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at Sunset Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 6, 2019 at 10:00am at the funeral home with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
