Gilbert meets in Heaven his wife, Josie Villerreal; infant son, Sergio Villerreal; brothers, Fernando and Eduardo Fernandez; and sister, Betty Garza.
Gilbert was a proud first-generation college graduate, achieving his BA in Social Work. Before his career in social work, Gilbert was in the Navy and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. After 20 years as a social worker, Gilbert retired.
Gilbert shared a passion for Martial Arts, earning his 5th degree Black Belt. He was a part of the Chuan Fa Martial Arts and Kenpo Karate; some knew him as Buddha, Si-Fu, or Sensei. Gilbert was also a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Los Bexareños Genealogical and Historical Society. He also had a passion for teaching, seeking knowledge, and servicing his community. He advocated for victims and had the strength and fortitude to carry out his responsibilities in his career; he had a servant’s heart.
Among some of his other hobbies, Gilbert loved food and loved to cook and feed his family. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and tinkering on home projects. Gilbert was secure in his faith and knew that God’s word would always be proven as a fact.
