Genovevo P. Ramirez went peacefully to be with the Lord on September 19, 2019 at the age of 80. He was born in Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico to Genovevo and Paula Ramirez on November 12, 1938 and orphaned at the young age of 12. He met his beautiful wife of fifty-four years, Maria Del Rosario in 1957. They were married in 1965.
In the 1960's Genovevo worked at a ranch in San Angelo, Texas. He then moved to San Antonio and worked for U.S. Brick through the 1970's and 80's and later for the Animal Defense League for almost two decades. He retired early due to Parkinson's, but continued to volunteer for the shelter even in retirement.
His life's story is the epitome of the American Dream. He was a hard worker, a stubborn man, and fierce patriot. He would always quote President John F. Kennedy, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." He was a proud father of three U.S. service members.
Genovevo had a massive sweet tooth and was frequently seen with a concha, donut, or palleta in his hand. He loved John Wayne movies and enjoyed buying scratch-off lottery tickets.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, uncle and loyal friend that will be dearly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents. Genovevo is survived by his wife, Maria Del Rosario, his children Paulita Almendarez, Rosario (Ricardo) Sanchez, Maria Del Carmen (Jesus) Flores and Ruben Ramirez, his sister Delfina Reyna, son-in-law Raymond Almendarez, 14 grandchildren (Raymond, Jolene, Genevieve (Matthew Cortinas), Natalie Almendarez, Ricardo, Daniel, Isabel Sanchez, Karina (Diego Ramirez), Sarah (Daniel Romanowski), Christian Flores; Christopher, Timothy, Noah, Caleb Ramirez). 2 great-grandchildren (Julianne Almendarez, Cristiano Ramirez), numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends from every period of his life.
Visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home on Thursday, September 26, 2019 from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm, with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 pm. Funeral services will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 4411 Moana Dr., San Antonio, Texas 78218 on Friday, September 27, 2019 at 9:30 am, with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
The Ramirez family would like to thank the staff of Altus and Good Shepherd Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Genovevo.
