Eugene (Gene) Price was born January 22, 1947, in Uvalde, Texas. He lived in Knippa, Teaxas until he left to attend Sul Ross State College. After graduating with a BA in 1968, he moved to Alamogordo, NM to teach at Chaparral Middle School. After attending the University of Idaho for four summers, he got his Masters in Geography.
Geography and traveling were one of his three passions. He loved looking at maps and planning trips, and he always had a “fun places-to-go” list.
His second passion was golf. The first summer he spent shoveling grain during harvest convinced him that working in the Uvalde golf shop was a much better plan. That is where he taught himself to play the sport that he never tired of. After retirement in 2007 he was able to work on the goal to play one round of golf in all 50 states. That goal was accomplished with the help of his River Crossing golfing buddies. Playing at RCC two to three days a week was a routine unless the weather was too hot or too cold. His saying was “There sure are too many good days to play on bad days.”
His third passion was Texas Football. On November 16, 1957 his dad took him to his first game in Austin and he was hooked. The official program from that game started a collection of hundreds of game programs which he kept in year order neatly stacked. Even when living out-of-state, he managed to attend many games by taking a red-eye flight on Friday and returning on Sunday. After retirement he added Texas baseball and basketball to his list of things to do, but nothing excited him more than Saturday Football in Austin.
Gene taught middle school for seven years before going to work for Amtrak. His first position was as an on-board supervisor out of Los Angeles. Promotion assignments required him to move to San Francisco, Albuquerque, New Orleans, Chicago, The Bay Area, Riverside, and finally Washington D.C. He and Juanita considered each move another adventure. He held many management and leadership positions and was very well respected amongst his peers.
After thirty-two years at Amtrak he and Juanita retired and moved to Spring Branch, Tx in 2007. Looking out at the hills and watching the deer, fox, birds, squirrels and other critters became a party of his daily routine. He was married for 55 years to Juanita who will cherish every memory.
Gene leaves behind his precious wife Juanita, sister Barbara, beloved niece Brenda Niemeyer and nephew VJ Niemeyer.
