Gayla grew up in Odessa, Texas with her older brother Ben. She graduated from Ector High School in 1960 and worked for the City of Odessa, retiring in 1996. On April 17, 1964 she married Bob Carbajal, an Odessa DJ better known as Bob Robin on radio station KOSA, and enjoyed the entertainment of being married to a hometown celebrity for many years. They had two children, Eddie and Amy, and made many memories raising them in Odessa before moving to San Antonio in 1996.
Gayla was a devout Christian and throughout her life enjoyed attending church and singing in the choir at Crossroads Baptist Church in San Antonio. She also enjoyed playing Bunco and the lottery, and she loved to travel and visit new places. Gayla officially became GiGi to her two grandchildren, Katie and Brendan, in 2003, though she was unofficially GiGi to many friends and neighbors long before then. She was also a prolific amateur photographer whose favorite subjects were always her friends and family.
Gayla is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Bob Carbajal; son Eddie Carbajal and daughter and son-in-law Amy and Kelly Morrow; granddaughter Katie Morrow and Zay Brown; grandson Brendan Morrow; great grandson Braxton Millard; brother Ben Gibson and wife Barbara, and numerous family members and friends.
