Gary James Hamm, age 65, was called home by the Lord on February 11, 2012. He was born Dec. 25, 1946 in Bethlehem, PA. He is the son of the late James A. and Katherine B. Hamm of Bethlehem, PA. Gary graduated in 1966 from Liberty High School, Bethlehem, PA completing courses in Drafting and Commercial Art. He joined the Navy in 1966. He served 3 tours as a member of the First Navy K-9 Corps in Viet Nam. He re-enlisted into the Army and became an Army instructor in the K-9 Corps at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX. In later years he was medically retired due to wounds received in Viet Nam. He achieved the rank of SFC (E7). He was a resident of San Antonio, TX over 45 years. He always said that he was a Texan by choice, not birth.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Helen V. Hamm, from Bethlehem, PA, a daughter, Tara Lynn Hamm of San Antonio, TX. Brother, Lawrence O. Hamm of Pen Argyl, PA.; sisters, Kathleen Weider and Ann Behers of Bethlehem, PA.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm on Friday, February 17, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with a visitation to be one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will be held at 9:30 am on February 21, 2012 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, TX with full military honors.
