The Reverend G. Richard Thayer III, age 69, of San Antonio, died suddenly on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. Richard was born in Port Lavaca, TX on October 9, 1938.
He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Texas where he played in the Longhorn Band. Following graduation in 1962, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a Navigator and attained the rank of Captain. He married Ann Elisabeth Ludlow in England and returning home, he enrolled in the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, TX where he earned a Master of Divinity.
He was ordained to the diaconate by Bishop Gosnell and to the priesthood by Bishop Dicus, both in 1971. He served churches in Menard, Ft. McKavett, Junction, San Antonio St. David's and was Chaplain at St. Mary's Hall, Edinburg St. Matthew's, as well as churches in Waco, Abilene, Dumas and was the Director of the Diocesan Camp and Conference Center in Amarillo.
He had retired from the active priesthood and was serving as Interim Rector of St. Philip's.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter. Richard is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ann; and two children, including Sarah Elisabeth Thayer of New York City and the Rev. Andrew Thayer who is Rector at St. Bartholomew's, Corpus Christi, his wife, Kelsey Elaine Thayer and their children, William Archer Thayer and Natalie Ahrens Thayer; cousins, Judy Webster, Brenham, TX, Frankie Matlock and Nell Harwood, both of Port Lavaca, TX.
May his soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercies of God, rest in peace.
