Fred Edward Lyssy

Fred will be remembered as a loving and faithful husband, a strong and caring father, an exceptional grandfather, and a loyal son to his now deceased parents Fred Vincent Lyssy and Irene Moczygemba Lyssy and sister Lillian. He is survived by his wife Cathy Lyssy, his daughter Kaye Berman and her husband Steve Berman, his son Mike Lyssy and his wife Stacy along with their 4 children Kendal, Nicole, Julia and her husband Evan, and Sophie. He is also survived by his son Stephen Lyssy and his wife Rhonda, their children Spencer and Mia; and his son Jeff Lyssy, his wife Jennifer, and their children Thomas, Anne Marie, Mary Catherine, and Joseph. Fred is also survived by his brother Walter Lyssy, his wife Kathie Lyssy, and his deceased sister. Lillian Moreno’s husband, Oscar Moreno. Fred loved this country and proudly served in the United States Army for 30 years, retiring as a Colonel. He served two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot and proudly commanded a tank battalion in Germany, which he said was the most fun and fulfilling time in his distinguished military career. He was a proud Graduate of the Army War College. Many have described Fred as a true American patriot and hero.

He then proceeded to serve another entire career with Lockheed Martin and retired as a Vice President of Information Systems. From a small South Texas farming community, to earning his college degree and eventually his master’s degree from Texas Tech University to the many commendations and awards throughout his military career, Fred was always humble about his accomplishments.His biggest wish was for our family to thrive, and through his lessons we are. After retiring from his professional career, Fred also served for 3 terms as Mayor of Silver Plume, CO, where he and Cathy had a vacation home, where his first term started by him being a ‘write-in’ candidate! He was also an avid skier and was a Team Leader in the Copper Mountain Ski Area ‘Slope Watch’, the ski areas Ambassador Program.

His Catholic faith guided his life in all his decisions, and he was a loyal and faithful servant to God. Fred believed in giving back some of the blessings bestowed upon him by helping however, he thought best, some of his last words were “The Good Lord has blessed and provided well for our family; it is important that we give back.” Fred and Cathy were significant supporters of the new Polish Heritage Museum in Panna Maria. His contributions included serving with the Knights of Columbus, serving with the St. Pius X Arboreans taking care of the church grounds, volunteered doing taxes for under-resourced families, and just giving time to whoever might need help. He was also active in the local chapter of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association.

Fred was a tremendous grandfather, and there is not one important moment in his 10 grandchildren’s lives that he missed. He will be dearly missed by his grandkids and they will hold onto his memories and life lessons forever. Every one of them wants to make Grandpa and Grandma proud.

We had many fun times with Fred including the annual Christmas Sausage-making Party, the Tom Stocker Memorial Fishing Tournament, the Annual Dove Hunt at his cousins’ Jim and Larry Skloss’ Farm, and family parties for any and every occasion. He loved to have a good time and be surrounded by family and friends. As everyone who knows our family understands - if you invite one of us, the whole family will probably show up! Fred touched so many lives and no one has ever said cross words about him. He was the definition of Soldier, Statesman, and Knightly Gentleman. We are so blessed and fortunate to have had him in our lives as husband, father, grandpa, uncle, friend, and mentor.
