Francisco Jose Rodriguez, MD, entered eternal rest in San Antonio, Texas on June 21, 2017 at the age of 81. He was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to Pedro and Dolores Arboleda Rodriguez on February 8, 1936. In 1958 Francisco received his degree from the University of Santo Domingo medical school. He interned at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, OH and did residencies at Colorado State Hospital in Pueblo, CO, E J Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo, NY, and Gowanda State Hospital in Helmuth, NY.
He made his home in San Antonio, TX in 1966 and became the first Hispanic psychiatrist in the city. From 1969-1971 he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Medical Corps at Fort Campbell, KY. After his service in the Army, Francisco continued his private practice until the end of 2014. He was part owner of the San Antonio Spurs from 1977-1988, and an original investor in South West General Hospital where he became Chief of Staff in 1985. He was a member of the AMA, APA, TMA, Bexar County Medical Society and Bexar County Psychiatric Society.
Francisco was an accomplished and generous man who leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Suzanne Mary Rodriguez, children: Dana Marie Rodriguez-Martinez (Jose), Dr. Francisco J. Rodriguez, Jr (Kimberly), George Gregory Rodriguez (Laurie), Tomas Michael Rodriguez (Kim); and eleven grandchildren to cherish his memories. The family wishes to thank the staff of Poet's Walk Memory Care and Christus Sister Mary Hospice for their loving care.
Family will receive guests at Sunset Northwest funeral home on Sunday, July 2, 2017 from 4:00p.m.-8:00p.m. Service will continue at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 9:00a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association in his honor.
