Fleur Winnecour Tamon was a first-generation American, born to Eastern European parents 99 1/2 years ago in Milwaukee, WS. She was curious about all subjects, a lover of the written word and of music and was a classically trained pianist. At age 19, she married Harvey Tamon, a captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Her first child, Terry, was born 2 years later. Harlan came 5 years after, followed by Heidi when Harlan was 2 years old.Fleur was a writer of humorous nonfiction, publishing 2 books and numerous magazine and newspaper articles. She also taught creative writing at Our Lady of the Lake College, St. Mary’s University and San Antonio College. She was an avid duplicate bridge player, music and movie critic and newspaper and periodical reader. You could find her any day at Luby’s Northstar, drinking iced tea while reading her Time Magazine or New York Times and people-watching. She raised her 3 children, exposing them to Bach, Tchaikovsky and The Mamas & The Papas. She loved shopping for her kids and husband, dressing them in the latest styles. She was always dressed to the “9’s” from head to toe with matching shoes, purses and wigs for each outfit and then, once the seasons ended, selling everything by advertising in the Express before garage sales were a “thing” and starting all over with new, lovely clothing.
In 1981, she became Grammy to Brandon. She loved being a grandmother, taking him to movies, concerts, symphonies and Baskin-Robbins. 9 years later, Rebekah became grandchild #2. Fleur loved telling her the names of all the classical composers and taking her for rich desserts which she (Fleur) mostly ate.
She was funny, brilliant (a Mensa member) and always entertaining. There are so many hilarious “Fleur Stories.” Everyone who knew and loved her had one. She adored her family and introduced them to everyone she saw. In her later life, she kept her short wit and sense of humor, even as her memory began to fail her.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Harvey Tamon, her parents Rose and Hyman Winnecour, her sister Charlotte Nayfach Garson, her sister- and brother-in law Leora and Louis Arbetter, her niece Carole Nayfach Batilana and her beloved son Harlan. She leaves behind her 2 daughters, Terry Brewer (husband Pete), Heidi Nichols (husband Tim), her grandchildren Brandon McKelvey and Rebekah Scott (husband Jake) along with her nieces and nephews, Norman Nayfach (wife Marisa), Dr. Ruth Fagan-Wilen, Marcos Garson (wife Sharona), Ilene Arbetter, Ron Arbetter and several grand nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Doctors Without Borders or to a favorite charity.
