Dr. Fernando Aguirre, aged 61, died on Monday, May 11, 2020 in Helotes, TX after a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a child of Christ and a Believer in eternal life which he is now enjoying.
He was born in Odessa, TX, the third son to Manuel and Merced Aguirre. He attended Ector High School and went onto The University of Texas at Austin earning a Bachelor of Art in Microbiology in 1980. He continued his education at Baylor College of Medicine - Houston earning a Bachelor of Science and Physician Assistant Certificate in 1983. In 1994 he received his Doctor of Medicine from The University of Texas - Health Science Center at San Antonio Medical School where he also completed his residency.
He served the San Antonio community as an Internal Medicine specialist at MacGregor Medical Center which he helped to found. His patients knew him as a caring and compassionate doctor providing personalized, excellent medical care over decades to thousands of patients. His medical community colleagues trusted and respected him and he was recognized from 2008 to 2019 in Texas Monthly as a “Texas Super Doctor” which identifies top doctors as selected by their peers and independent research.
Fernando and Veronica married in 1996 and they enjoyed a loving marriage of over 23 years filled with fun times with family, friends, and their fur babies (AJ, Ace, Lola). Fernando loved working out and running was his greatest passion. Despite not being able to continue running in later years, he always had that runner’s mentality of pushing himself harder and knowing there was another mile just ahead for him. Another passion was good wine and spirits, and he especially loved the opportunity to share a nice bottle with friends and family.
Fernando is survived by his wife, Veronica and his brothers Manuel, Ricardo and Ismael as well as an extended family of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Manuel and Merced. He was a beloved and special part of Veronica’s family who will miss him greatly.
Fernando is also survived by a great community of friends whom he made along his entire life. His friendships span many layers and many decades, from boyhood friends, college roommates and medical school and residency partners. Many in the San Antonio medical community became good friends and, along with his business partners and co-workers at MacGregor Medical, all were very special to him. Many neighbors at HPTHOA became the best of friends and more like brothers and sisters he could confide in and rely upon. All of these people added joy to his life and he did his best to add to theirs. Fernando lived a good life where he gave more than he took in every circumstance.
