Born in Ottawa, Kansas on October 14, 1933, Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents Fred and Bertha Morgan, former husband Jack Holstead, sister Martha Cecil, and her husband of 32 years Moddie E. Smith. She is survived by sisters Alice Brewer and Freda Chauvin, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was a precious and loving step mother to April and Bo Myers, and Steve and Jacquelyn Smith. She relished being “Ebbie” to grandchildren Chris and wife, Michelle Myers, Karisha and husband, Charles Schattenberg, Shawna and husband, Michael Schmidt, and Brad and wife, Amanda Smith. She adored her 4 great grands Spencer Myers, Elaina Myers, Zackary Schattenberg, and Camden Schmidt.
Evelyn graduated from Fayetteville High School in Arkansas in 1951. She was a two year Drum Major while in high school, as well as a fine musician on clarinet. She attended The University of Arkansas after graduating, and was a twirler for Arkansas, prior to transferring to Baylor. She graduated in 1955 with a degree in music education, and also was a Golden girl while at Baylor! Evelyn taught junior high bands in Ft. Worth and Waco before relocating south to San Antonio. She was blessed to work, as well, with special needs students in a pilot program using music as therapy while in Waco. This really touched her heart. Evelyn taught band at Longfellow Jr. High in the San Antonio ISD as well as Pease Middle School in Northside ISD. One of her greatest joys was watching her students develop a love for music, with some choosing a career in music education as well. No doubt she had a wonderful gift of inspiration and motivation…both to students and colleagues alike.
She retired from NISD in 1985 and moved with Moddie to the serenity of Canyon Lake where hand feeding the deer became a daily ritual…
Evelyn loved life! She loved family… she loved music…She loved convertibles and Blue Bell ice cream…she loved Drum Corp International… She loved baseball and soccer games…she loved The Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys…she loved neighbors and friends… She led by example and touched hearts in every step she took.
