

Evelyn J. Shaver was born in Poteet, Texas on January 21, 1920. She peacefully went to be with her Lord after a long illness at the age of 89 on July 5, 2009. She was the last surviving sibling in a family of thirteen born to John J. and Lula Tollette.A longtime resident of San Antonio, she attended Brackenridge High School and obtained her nursing degree from Santa Rosa School of Nursing. Proudly serving in the Army Nurse Corps, she met and married her first husband Jim L. Kuykendall, who was a casualty of an air battle over Polesti, Romania during World War II.Upon her return to San Antonio, she worked for many years as an office nurse for Dr. James Siever.On December 16, 1951, she married Dr. Benjamin B. Shaver and worked closely with him throughout his practice.Evelyn contributed her considerable talents to the Bexar County Medical Society Alliance, San Antonio Pediatric Society, Texas Pediatric Society, Bexar County Republican Party, Brackenridge mid-30's Alumni Association, Main Avenue High School Alumni Association and the San Antonio Liederkranz.She was devoted to her Catholic faith and a member of St. Pius X Church. Evelyn touched the lives of everyone she met with her charm, grace, and endearing nature. She loved dancing, being with her family and entertaining her friends. Evelyn was generous, charismatic and always had room for one more. She will always be remembered for her glowing personality, her indomitable spirit, and her zest for living.Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, John and Lula Tollette; her brothers and sisters, Maudie Mussey, Anna Crofton, Johnnie Thompson, Grace Tag, Nina Gros, Agnes Lavery, Gertrude Grant, Lou Biasiolli, Geraldine Barclay, Mary Ethel Lee, Horace Tollette, and Bill Tollette; child, Benjamin B. Shaver II; and grandson, Jimmy Kuykendall.She is survived by her husband of 58 years Dr. Benjamin B. Shaver; son Jim J. Kuykendall and wife Gaylynn; daughter Becky Benson and husband Vernon; son John Shaver and wife Jenise; grandchildren, Sarah Kuykendall, Amanda Kuykendall, Benjamin Landrum and wife Catherine, Kate Russ and husband Jon, Benjamin Shaver, Beth Shaver, Candice Groce and husband Matt, Cherie Benson, Bjorn Schey, Bob Benson and wife Nancy, Sandra Brantley, Eric Benson and wife Laura, and Mark Benson. In addition, she is survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews and cousins.Private Interment to be in San Marcos at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to her niece's mission Notre Dame Clinic and Maternity in Ghana.
