Evangeline “Vangie” Elizondo was born in San Antonio, TX to Victor and Eva (Maldonado)Zavala and passed away on April 4, 2012 at the age of 75. She founded MANA, A National Latina Organization, in 1974 and served as the first president. Vangie was inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame in 2004. She also retired from civil service, working with several branches of the armed forces and government agencies, after 40 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sisters, Isabel Valdez and Mary Lou Flores. Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Lucio; daughter, Lucinda Anderson (Gordon); son, James David Elizondo; grandsons, Ross & Ian Anderson; brother, Victor Zavala; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, April 13, 2012 in Sunset Northwest Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
