November 16, 1942 — June 02, 2023
San Antonio, Texas
Our family is heartbroken to announce that Evangelina M. Gonzales, 80, of San Antonio, TX, passed away Friday June 02, 2023 at her granddaughter's home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born November 16, 1942 in San Antonio, TX to Tomasita and Victor Martinez Senior. Married at the age of 15, she tirelessly raised two girls and four boys who bore the fruits of her labor, love and devotion up until the final hours of her passing.
Despite formal education, she became the backbone of her former husband’s successful foundation business that laid the foundation for many homes in San Antonio and surrounding areas. She later ventured as a local business woman who oversaw her primary home, multiple pieces of real estate, and even her own local business “Spanish Grill Thrift Shop” while continuing to raise her two youngest sons. She was a good member of the Better Business Bureau and often helped others start their own business and to navigate the business community.
Somehow, she managed to balance her daily family and business life while relying on her faith to do good for her family, friends, and neighbors. When not busy, she loved spending time in her gardens, camping, going to the coast, parks and rivers, family outings and reunions, barbequing, and especially traveling out-of-state to visit family. She loved and cherished every moment with her family, friends, and neighbors often talking about how proud and blessed she was of her family.
She never hesitated to offer anyone visiting something to eat or drink and was often found planning, preparing, or cooking something even if tired or feeling sick. She even found the strength and time to care for her mother and father throughout their ailments, surgeries, and final days on this earth. But her greatest joy was helping to take care of and raise her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She placed our Lord and God first in her life while rarely missing church and always sharing her favorite biblical stories reminding her family to pray before every meal. She showed her family how to give to the church and taught us to give tithes and offerings according to our income. Even when she could not go to church, she always found a quiet space to pray and read the bible.
Evangelina is survived by her only sister and three brothers; Amelia Vargas, (late) Gerardo Martinez, Joe Martinez, and Victor Martinez; her children; Patricia Garcez, Sylvia A. Obaya, (late) Simon Gonzales III, Victor M. Gonzales, Michael M. Gonzales, and David Gonzales; 21 loving grandchildren, and 33 precious great-grandchildren.
Following burial at San Jose Burial Park, there will be a gathering from 12 to 4 PM at VFW Post #9186 located at 650 VFW Blvd, San Antonio, TX 78223. VFW Post #9186 is located off Roosevelt Avenue and just north of Mission Road. Bill Miller’s BBQ will be catered and served during this event.
