Lord on September 2, 2016 at the age of 91. Mrs. Martinez graduated from Laredo Martin High
School in 1944. For a short time she attended Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos,
Texas before returning to San Antonio where she worked as the bookkeeper for the Finck’s
Cigar Company. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Our Lady of the Lake College in 1970
and her Master’s degree from the University of Texas San Antonio in 1975. From childhood,
Steffi Martinez knew she was destined to be an educator. She began her educational career
even before she had a degree teaching at the Madonna Center on Castroville Rd. in 1964. She
returned to serve the Edgewood District as an elementary teacher, campus principal, early
childhood education supervisor and district administrator. In May 1988 Mrs. Martinez was
elected to the Edgewood Independent School District school board and in 2009 was elected as
president of the school board until November 2010 when she stepped down for health reasons.
After leaving the school board, Mrs. Martinez remained an active and vocal advocate for the
children of the Edgewood Independent School District.
She was an active member of San Martin De Porres Catholic Church serving as a eucharistic
minister, catechism teacher and the praying of rosaries when called upon. During the historic
papal visit of Pope John II, Steffi served as an usher along the parade route.
In June 1996, Mrs. Martinez became a member of the Edgewood Lions Club. From the
beginning, Lion Stefi was always active and served in most Officer positions including Club
President in 2009 – 2010. For her efforts, she was recognized by Lions Clubs International with the
100% Presidents Award. Lion Estefana continued to share her leadership serving in various
positions of the Club especially in ways acting as a Liaison between the Lions Club and the
Edgewood community. She was always a strong voice of reason and support and helped to
promote the Lions service throughout the community. Lion Stefi was a Lion that quietly went about
her service to others always involved and focused upon programs that would benefit the Edgewood
students. Lion Stefi supported all projects of the club but particularly those related to services for
special needs children and young adults seeking educational advancement through scholarship
programs. For her many years of service, Lion Stefi was recognized in various ways from the Club,
District and Lions International. Lion Estefana Martinez received the 100% Attendance Award for all
of her 20 years of service. Some of the higher honors she received were the “Life Membership” from
the Texas Lions Camp, the Twenty Year Monarch Chevron from Lions Clubs International and the
coveted “President’s Appreciation” award from most of the Club Presidents she served under.
Mrs. Martinez is preceded in death by her parents, Galo and Clemencia Cavazos; husband,
Carlos Martinez Jr. She is survived by her children, Carlos Martinez III (Terry), Javier Martinez
(Lydia), Mark Martinez (Elizabeth) and Anna Hayden; 11 grandchildren and 9 great
grandchildren. The Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, September 8,
2016 at Trevino Funeral Home, 226 Cupples Rd., with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral
Procession will depart from the funeral home on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. for a
Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 a.m. at San Martin De Porres Catholic Church. Interment will
follow in San Fernando Cemetery No. 2. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made
to St Jude’s Children Hospital.
