Ernestine Herrera Juárez was born in Asherton, Texas on March 24, 1931. As her family grew, they moved onto San Antonio in 1941. Ernestine was a child of immigrants and worked odd jobs to help support the family, including annual trips to harvest apples in Sunnyside, Washington. Later on during the 1950’s, she found decades of permanent employment in the financial service industry. Grandma Ernie liked to reminisce that she was probably one of the first Mexican American women hired by a local bank in San Antonio.
Grandma Ernie was a devout Catholic. She attended Mass weekly and prayed the rosary every night. God blessed her with a long life and her faith in Him carried her to the end as she bravely waited her “turn to go home.”
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Teodulo Juárez; her parents, Santiago Herrera and Alfonsa Martinez; and siblings: Natividad Vasquez, Herman Herrera, and Evodio Herrera.
Ernestine is survived by her two sons, Juan Juárez (Belinda) and Benito Juárez (Diana); grandchildren: Benito Juárez Jr.(Amy), Erik Juárez (Jennifer), Matthew Juárez (Monica), Dominique Juárez (William), and Marina Paredes (Dominic); siblings: Emma Garcia and María Elena Villarreal; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Her memory will live on in our hearts and she will be greatly missed by all.
Many thanks to Heart of Texas Hospice staff for their devoted care and support during Ernestine’s final months. They all deserve special recognition.
