Long time San Antonio resident Ellen K. Carle passed away unexpectedly on October 31 at her home in Windcrest. She was born November 16, 1943 in Wurzburg, Germany, to Alfons and Irmgard Kleber, who predeceased her.
A dedicated scholar, she earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from Trinity University and later a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. She was a loving wife and mother, who lived life to the fullest. She was especially fond of classical music and was an ardent supporter of the San Antonio Symphony, the Chamber Music Ensemble, and the Opera Guild. An outdoor enthusiast, who traveled widely in pursuit of adventure, she climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mt. Elbrus in Russia, and Mt. Aconcagua in South America. She also mastered Arctic dogsledding in Iqaluit, Canada, and sea kayaking in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. Her warmth, generosity of spirit, and infectious enthusiasm will be truly missed by her many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Donald E. Carle, M.D., and is survived by her son, Christopher Carle and her brother Rolf Kleber.
