Edward Henry Spalten, Jr. peacefully and joyfully joined his devoted wife of 59 years, Grace, in the arms of the Lord on August 22, 2009 on the first anniversary of her death. Following a valiant and amazing battle, he left on his terms, not ours. Ed was born December 16, 1925 to Hilda Mueller Spalten and Edward Henry Spalten, Sr. He graduated from Central Catholic High School, proudly served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theatre during W.W. II and attended St. Mary's University. He led the family business, American Roofing and Metal Co., which was founded by his grandfather in 1904. He participated in the business until his death, as it grew to accommodate the fifth generation of his proud family. Ed was absolutely committed to God and to providing well for his family. Their well being was the focus of his life. He instilled in his family his code of God, Family, Morality, and Work Ethic. He loved to travel with his wife and family and did so often and extensively. His passions were hunting and fishing with his sons and grandchildren and enjoying the great outdoors. He was blessed to do so until his passing. His joys included time at Lake McQueeney boating, BBQing, and relaxing with his family, fishing and cooking crabs at the coast, driving the motor home across the country, teaching his grandchildren to drive long before the legal age, singing, storytelling, and most of all eating. Ed was demanding but loving, rancorous yet tenderhearted, frugal yet generous. He instilled upon his family the "hard line" between right and wrong. He loved and worshipped God, his wife, and his children. It is a great comfort to all that he has joined Grace knowing his steadfast devotion to her and the loneliness he felt without her. He is survived by his children Cathy Anne Spalten, Edward William Spalten and his wife, Mary, Dr. Thomas Alan Spalten and his wife, Gretchen, Hazel Carol Amick and her husband, Tom, and James Michael Spalten; his brother, Dr. Robert George Spalten and his wife, Jackie; Grandchildren Paige Katherine Bonner, Michael Paul Bonner, Michaelanne Bonner Kossmann, and her husband, Kevin, Thomas Edward Bonner and his wife Mariya, James Michael Bonner, William Carter Spalten and his wife, Erin, Matthew Edward Spalten, Melissa Caroline Spalten, Analise Spalten, Alan Thomas Spalten and his wife, Lauren, Jonathan Edward Spalten, Chevis Thomas Amick, Christopher Wayne Amick, Nicholas Lee Amick, Elizabeth Grace Amick; great grandchildren, Emma Grace Kossmann, Kiley Grace Bonner, Kate Anna Spalten, Julia Maria Spalten, and one more on the way, numerous extended family including nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
