Born and raised in San Antonio, Dorothy (Dodi) attended Brackenridge High School and the University of Texas at Austin, where she received her B.A. in German and English in 1938.
In 1940 she married Edward Miles Strieber (Mickey)and had five children in five different states during his 20 years as a nuclear engineer and Air Force officer. Tulsa, Oklahoma; Garden City, Kansas; Hanford, Washington; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Dayton, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and Bonn, Germany were their sequential homes.
In 1965 she earned a masters degree in English and began a teaching career that climaxed in Austin, Texas, their first retirement home. She helped open Reagan High School. She and her team teacher developed the curricula for World Culture and the Humanities courses later adopted throughout the Austin School System.
In 1987 she and Mickey moved to the brand new Air Force Village II in San Antonio, a community which she helped build over the next 29 years. Dodi contributed actively to the Catholic Community and the residents’ council, and established and served on the still-thriving Juice Patrol in the Vista Health Care Center there. She was also an avid bridge player throughout her adult life.
Dodi is survived by her children: Mamie Helen Rockafellar of Seattle, WA; Elizabeth Kay Schodek of Malden, MA; Edward Miles Strieber, Jr. and his wife, Pat Pope Strieber of Austin, TX.; Dorothy Ann Strieber of Grand Junction, CO; and Louis Charles Strieber of Yorktown, TX; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass in her honor will be celebrated at the Air Force Village II (now called Blue Skies of Texas West) on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. She will be interred with her late husband at Fort Sam Houston on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Dodi requested donations to: The Vista Health Care Center, 5100 John D.
