Dorothy Sash was born Elizabeth Dorothy Graves on October 23, 1921 in San Antonio, Texas and she passed away Sunday, November 11, 2007 at the age of 86. Her parents were James Henry Graves and Elizabeth Catherine Villemain Graves. The Graves family can be traced back to Jamestown, Virginia when Captain Thomas Graves came over on the second trip to Jamestown in 1608. Her mother's family was part of the group that came over from the Alsace Lorraine region of eastern France in 1844 with Henry Castro and helped settle Castroville, Texas. "Dorothy", as she liked to be called, graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1939, and with her widow mother and aunt went to Europe as a graduation present. They traveled throughout Europe. When in Italy, they told their guide they were going to get a villa in France and live there at least a year while Dorothy went to art school. The guide told them not to do it and instead leave Europe as soon as possible. After much argument, Dorothy's mother relented and they left on what turned out to be the last trip of the Queen Mary before the military took it over for military purposes as World War II consumed Europe. Returning to San Antonio, Dorothy went to then, San Antonio College, which later became Trinity University. A year later, she worked at Kelly Air Force taking dictation as the military interrogate for spies brought in from all over the world. She met Glenn Roy Sash, from Illinois, who was stationed in San Antonio at Fort Sam Houston, and were married in early 1946. She was a loving housewife and mother. She was a member of St. Ann's Sewing Circle for many years. The Sewing Circle hand sewed Christmas ornaments which were sold and the money was given to St. Ann's Church and St. Anthony's Thrift Shop benefitting children with disabilities. She and her husband were members of the St. Gerard's Double Ring Club. For over 40 years, they were devout members of St. Ann's Church and later, St. Brigid's. Dorothy continued her art education, loved to paint and was an accomplished artist. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Glenn. Survivors include their children: Karen Cooper and husband, Floyd; Janis Richard; Nancy Bellone and husband, John; grandchildren: Bill Cooper, Michael Cooper, Jonathan Richard, Liz Richard Morelock, Stacey Bellone Doranski, and Megan Bellone; and ten great-grandchildren. She was deeply loved and will be truly missed.
