In 1934, Dorothy Ann Kohlman was the first child born to an officer at Randolph Field in Universal City, Texas, just outside of San Antonio. The third child of four, born to Col. Herbert M. Newstrom and Marion Estelle Newstrom, she was a self-proclaimed “Air Force brat”, living, among other places, in Germany, Panama, California, and Texas. She graduated from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. She traveled to Japan to teach elementary school. There, she met the love of her life, Harold W. Kohlman, and they married in 1961. The happy couple returned to the States and settled in San Antonio, where Dorothy gave birth to Harold Kohlman, Jr., in 1962. Shortly thereafter she went to work for the San Antonio Independent School District. She taught at W.W. White Elementary School and Otto Pfeiffer Elementary School, touching the lives of hundreds of children over decades.
Through her contacts with the Alamo Dog Obedience Club and San Antonio Kennel Club, she made countless friends without ever training or showing a dog. In 1996, she was present for the birth of her grandson, Ivan Kohlman. In February 2016, Dorothy and Harold celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
Dorothy was predeceased by her father Herbert, her mother Marion Estelle, and her sister Betty Jane Payne. Dorothy is survived by her husband Harold, of the home; her son Harold Jr. and her daughter-in-law Lou; her grandson Ivan; her brothers Herbert M. Newstrom, Jr., Charles A. Newstrom and his wife Madaline; many beloved nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
