Born in Mississippi, Donna’s family moved to New Orleans a few years later where she developed a deep connection to the vibrant city. Even though they moved to San Antonio when Donna was 15 yrs old and she remained there until her death, she often spoke fondly of her New Orleans roots and visited the city often.
She married Ramon Kottler and together they welcomed two children, Robert and Lisa. Even as Donna and Ray’s paths diverged, they remained close, sharing the joys and responsibilities of parenthood.
Later in life, Donna again found companionship and happiness when she entered into a 30-year relationship (including 24 years married) with Robert (Bobby) Ahr. This union brought a new chapter of joy and fulfillment into her life. They shared countless cherished moments and created beautiful memories together.
Donna was a devoted mother, selflessly sacrificing her own desires to ensure her children had everything they needed, and extended the same love and care to her granddaughter, Rachel Kottler, and great-grandaughter Naia. Her love and dedication to her family were unwavering.
Donna was a true pioneer, breaking barriers and shattering expectations in the male-dominated world of drag racing from 1963 to 1970. She fearlessly competed against mostly male opponents and often emerged victorious, setting record-breaking times. Going fast down that track was one of the great joys of her life.
Beyond the racetrack, Donna channeled her courage and feisty spirit as a loving advocate for people or animals in need. Throughout her life, first on behalf of her kids and granddaughter, and later on behalf of anyone who needed it, Donna’s kindness, sass and all around good humor were a source of joy to many. It was no surprise that so many looked to Donna as a trusted friend, or even a second mother.
Donna devoted countless hours to charitable organizations such as SAMMinistries, where she extended a helping hand to the homeless, and the San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF), where her empathy made a difference in countless lives. Her commitment to helping those less fortunate was an integral part of her character.
Her love for animals was boundless, and for many years, she enthusiastically volunteered at the Animal Defense League of San Antonio. She worked tirelessly to ensure that these animals had the best possible lives, even opening her heart and home to a few as her own cherished pets.
A lifelong advocate for others, Donna will be remembered for her loving heart, adventurous spirit, and unforgettable humor.
Donna was preceded in death by her mother, father and husband Bobby.
Donna is survived by son and daughter-in-law Robert Kottler & Teri Nolin; daughter and daughter-in-law Lisa Kottler & Adrianna Cantu; and granddaughter and great-granddaughter Rachel and Naia Kottler.
The family extends its greatest appreciation to those who cared for Donna. The entire staff at Heartis San Antonio made Donna feel so welcome and showed her such compassion and kindness. Freedom Hospice provided exceptional and loving care to both Donna and our family. Most importantly, our family member, Eva Cantu, an incredibly gifted caregiver, was by Donna's side giving her love, compassion and the best quality care.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in her honor to the organizations that she held dear: the Animal Defense League of San Antonio, SAAMinistries, the San Antonio Aids Foundation (SAAF), or to the charitable organization of your liking.
