Donald Lee Pollard was born in Osceola, TX January 29, 1940 to John Hollis and Ethylon Hancock Pollard and moved to Seymore, TX in 1953. A good athlete, Don earned letters for football and golf while in high school. He played both offense and defense on Seymour High’s 1957 team, a state semifinalist, as well as being a class officer earning a diploma with honors in 1958. Don was a Master Mason in the Grand Masonic Lodge of Texas and instructed in the first three degrees of the craft by his father, Masonic Master John Hollis Pollard, of the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge. Don attended Texas A&M College, where he made many lifelong friends while in the Corps of Cadets. Don earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering in May ‘62. Upon graduation he worked in Galveston, TX, for the Army Corps of Engineers for 1 year then returned to Texas A&M earning his M.E. in Civil Engineering in August ’64 and was a member of Chi Epsilon honor fraternity for Civil Engineers. While attending college in 1960 Don met his future wife, Patricia Ann Breckenridge. They were married in Oxon Hill, MD, on October 19, 1962 and lived in Texas City. While Don was working on his Master’s Degree their first son, Donald Paul Pollard, was born in January, 1964. The family moved to San Antonio, TX, where he had been hired by the City Water Board. His second son, Daniel Ross Pollard, was born in March, 1965. Don’s first project at the City Water Board was Project Engineer for a central heating and cooling facility to serve Hemisfair ’68, which still serves the city. Don held several positions during his tenure with the City Water Board including Asst Director, Production, Director of Production, and Operations Branch Manager. He was serving as the Director of the Engineering Department for San Antonio Water Systems upon retirement in 1994 after 30 years of employment. In his career, he most appreciated the dedication, integrity, and loyalty of his co-workers. Don continued to work as a consulting engineer. Don had many hobbies, one being reading. Don had diverse interests to include American history, theories of science, philosophical writings, and historical Western fiction. He also liked golfing and crossword puzzles. He was an active member of Bexar Kiwanis, including past president. For 40 years he attended and volunteered at Alamo Hts Christian Church including co-chair of Board of Deacons and chair of property committee. Don and Patricia enjoyed several years of travel with dear friends the Hallers and Novosads, and by themselves. Don was a devoted family man who’s love, guidance, and partnership, will be sorely missed.
Don is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia B. Pollard, sons Paul Pollard and Dan Pollard, daughters-in-law Alma and Stacie Pollard, grandsons Mason, Kyle, and Joshua Pollard, sister-in-law Joyce Pollard and nephews John Hollis II, David and Jeff Pollard of Arlington, TX and their families, cousin Bob Pollard (Betty) of Keller, TX, sister-in-law Dorothy Tucker of San Antonio, brother-in-law Rick Breckenridge, nephews Jason Dugger and Tyler Breckenridge and niece Savannah Breckenridge of Austin, many cousins’ families. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles Hollis and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at Sunset Funeral Home at 12:00 noon on Jan. 29, 2014. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park. A reception will be held at Alamo Heights Christian Church, 6435 N. New Braunfels, immediately following the interment.
