Born in San Antonio on August 24, 1953, to loving parents Guadalupe and Bacilia C. Hernandez, she was strong-willed, fun-loving, and competitive. From a young age, she insisted on doing what she wanted and would never turn down a quick competition. Naturally athletic, Delia excelled at soccer and played on a co-ed recreational team. Delia even completed a marathon without prior training simply because her friend suggested they run it together. Even in young adulthood, she would ask her brothers to race her around the track, running actual circles around one of them. When she lost, she immediately suggested, “Let’s do one more!”
Delia attended UT Austin and completed her degree in 1976. After graduating, Delia began her 34-year teaching career at Harlandale School District, where she taught English, Physical Education, and Health and coached several girls’ sports teams.
In her free time, she loved singing and dancing with her friends. At many events, Delia was always one of the first ones on the floor, and she loved leading partnered dances. She’d been known to make a face or two if one of her brothers tried to lead. They eventually learned. Later in life, Delia introduced her mother to Las Vegas. The two were partners in crime and visited multiple times a year. Delia also loved watching sports and was a dedicated Spurs fan, being a season-ticket holder for over 20 years.
Delia was also passionate about Fiesta. She ensured she always had tickets to the day or night parade, often buying tickets for her siblings, nieces, and nephews. Always in the same spot, of course. She loved collecting things and had a robust collection of Fiesta medals, coins, art, Spurs memorabilia, and antique furniture.
Delia was a devoted, caring friend and always called to check in on loved ones. Only after her beloved mother became ill she retired to become her around-the-clock caretaker. We will never forget all she graciously and proudly sacrificed to care for our mother and grandmother. We were blessed to call her a sister and aunt.
Delia is preceded in death by her beloved parents and her sweet dog, Lil’ Bit. Delia is survived by her siblings: Lupito, Alicia, David, Ruben, Yolanda, and Raymundo. She also leaves behind 12 nieces/nephews and two great-nephews.
A visitation for Delia will be held November 27, 2022 from 5:00 to 10:00 with a rosary being at 7:00 at Trevino Funeral Home. A funeral mass will occur on November 28, 2022 at 10:00 at Christ the King Catholic Church followed by burial at San Fernando Cemetery III.
