David Alexander Mangum, age 83, passed away July 10, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on October 3, 1935 in Durham, North Carolina to Edward and Christine (Barneycastle) Mangum. He was a Communication Officer in the U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, and retired after over 20 years of dedicated service to his country. He then served as a Communication Officer for the U.S. State Department. Both of his careers allowed him to visit many different countries, including Africa - a place he developed a fascination for as a young boy.
He is survived by his wife Gloria Mangum; sons, David Mangum and An Mangum; daughter, Brenda Shepard; step-daughters, Rosemary Carlin, Robin Carlin and Verna Soto; grandchildren, Victoria DeLourdes, Meghan Ross, Jordan Sharpe, Lauren Shepard, Peter Hernandez, Jeffrey Burgess, Sebastian Thomas Molnar, Sabrina Molnar, Ana Mangum and Daniel Mangum; great-grandchildren, Emily DeLourdes, Abigail DeLourdes, Daniel Ross, Mason Ross, Eva Molnar and Katherine Rose; sister, Sarah Webster; brother, Christopher Spoon.
David was an avid reader and collector of books. He was also a huge sports fan, pulling for the Washington Redskins and Duke University Blue Devils. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, wit and compassion for those in need.
Visitation will be at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, Texas 78238 on Thursday July 25, 2019 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 26, 2019 at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home with interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with Air Force military honors.
