David V. Garcia, December 28, 1938 – January 11, 2018. We will miss our dear father, beloved grandfather, loving brother, great uncle and kindhearted soul. David was born in Engleman Gardens, Texas, to Guadalupe and Rosalia Garcia.
Brought up in South Texas amongst a large family, David was raised with solid family values and a strong work ethic. Being one of the eldest sons, he dropped out of high school to financially help his family. At age 26, he married Gloria Uranga. They were married for several years and raised four beautiful children. His children always affectionately called him “Papi” or “Poppy.” As each child learned to drive, David—a professional truck driver for more than 45 years—made it his mission to ensure they ventured out in life with a good set of wheels. He purchased a car or helped pay the monthly payments for each of his children. He took great pride in his profession and even at the age of 79, he enjoyed chauffeuring his sisters to doctor’s appointments, grocery stores and various other places around town. He taught his son to drive a John Deere tractor at age three, a car at age nine, and an 18-wheeler tractor trailer at age 11. Ironically, his driver training abilities prompted his own son to drive himself to drivers education classes at age 15. David always reminded his children to call him, regardless of the time of day, if they were tired and behind the wheel. He made a point to talk to them and crack a few jokes to make sure they were alert and safe on the road.
As his children grew older, he called them on their birthdays and played a recording of Las Mañanitas. He enjoyed playing rummy and poker with his sisters on an almost daily basis; and he always enjoyed a home-cooked meal but particularly loved his daughter’s homemade menudo. In David’s latter years, he was comforted by regularly attending CJCLife Church, pastored by his son-in-law. David was very proud of all of his children and grandchildren and he never missed a moment to communicate his love.
David playfully used the phrase “favorite child” with all of his children and it became a long-standing joke between siblings of who was his actual “favorite child.” David is survived by his four children including his “favorite” son David Garcia Jr. and wife Jennifer Garcia; and his three “favorite” daughters Diana Sundar and husband Pastor Philip Sundar; Deborah Zepeda and husband Eric Zepeda I, and Danielle Garcia. He is also survived by his grandchildren David Mitchell Garcia, Daimon Garcia, Elianna Garcia, Grayson Garcia, Cole Garcia, Reagan Garcia, and Eric James Zepeda II.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Guadalupe and Rosalia V. Garcia, and his siblings: Lupito Garcia, Ramona Vallejo, and Abel Garcia. At the time of passing, David was survived by his sister, Janie V. Garcia. The family is heartbroken that Janie V. Garcia since passed away five days after her brother on January 16, 2018. David is survived by his siblings: Mary Carrillo, Juan “Johnny” Garcia, Esperanza “Hopie” Flores, Rosie Vasquez, and Emmie Garcia.
