Daniel Cárcamo, a beloved son, brother, and friend, was taken from us far too soon on March 24, 2025, at the age of 29. Born on August 12, 1995, in Galveston, Texas, by breech presentation, Daniel entered the world on his own terms—a trait that defined his remarkable life. With his unmistakable red hair earning him the nickname “Big Red” at home, he stood out in every crowd, forging his own path and leaving an indelible mark on those who knew him. Our hearts are broken, but we will forever cherish the time we had with him.
Daniel spent most of his childhood in San Antonio, graduating from Clark High School in 2014. He went on to earn a degree in Finance from the Red McCombs School of Business at UT Austin in December 2018. During his time at UT, he was an active member of Alpha Tau Omega, the University of Texas Securities Investment Team, and the University of Texas Stock Team. Accepted into Boston University’s Masters in Engineering program in 2019, Daniel’s plans were sadly interrupted by health challenges.
A lifelong athlete, Daniel excelled in age-group swimming through middle school, played basketball for fun, and ran cross country and club running in high school. At college, he embraced club rugby with the same passion. His true home, however, was the outdoors. An avid hiker and rock climber, Daniel explored the Guadalupe Mountains, White Sands, Big Bend, and countless National Parks, often stopping mid-journey to scale a boulder or peak—path or no path. He shared his love of adventure, teaching others to climb and embrace the wild beauty of nature.
Music was another of Daniel’s great loves. Self-taught on the guitar, Big Red would breeze through the back door of our home, open a bottle of wine, and fill the air with melodies, drawing everyone into his orbit. His curiosity was boundless, too. He thrived on spirited debates about world affairs, a passion sparked during his Model UN trip to New York in high school. An avid reader, he filled his college apartment with a list of life goals and books—from Plato’s Republic to Shakespeare, Dylan Thomas, and Pablo Neruda—most of which he proudly crossed off. His favorite poem, T.S. Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, captured his playful humor; he’d quote, “I grow old… I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled,” teasing those around him with a grin. Gregarious and warm, Daniel turned any gathering into a celebration.
His compassion shone through in “Lenses for the Future,” a charity he co-founded with his uncle, Dr. Mario Cárcamo, OD, to provide glasses to Central Americans in need. A world traveler, Daniel’s adventures took him to Mexico, Nicaragua, Belize, Costa Rica, England, Holland, Sweden, Australia, the British Virgin Islands, and beyond. He swam in the Blue Hole, scuba dived in the Great Barrier Reef and Hawaii, and lived life as an unending adventure.
Daniel’s heart extended to his loyal dogs, Ricki, a rescued Australian cattle hound, and Coco, a tree-climbing rat terrier, who were constant companions in his outdoor escapades and quiet moments alike. Above all, he treasured his relationships. He pushed his family and friends to pursue excellence, always encouraging growth and connection. He is survived by his grandparents, parents, brothers, and a wide circle of uncles, cousins, and friends who will carry his light forward.
Daniel’s life was a testament to courage, curiosity, and love. In his memory, we’re reminded to climb our own mountains, strum a tune, read deeply, and hold our loved ones—including our four-legged friends—close. In honor of Big Red, we request that attendees wear something red to his memorial, celebrating the vibrant spirit he brought to us all.
