She was preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, Frank D. Alvarado; her father, Crisanto Moran, Sr. and mother, Alejandrina Anguiano Moran; her sisters, Maria De La Luz Duarte (Lucy), Carmen M Vidal; brothers Samuel A. Moran (Sam) and Crisanto A. Moran, Jr. (Chris); as well as her grandchildren Aaron Michael Garza and Chelsea Garza.
She is survived by her brother, David A. Moran; her children, Humberto M. Estrada, Jr. (Armandina), Luis M. Garza, Jr. (Joyce), Aaron Garza (Teresa), Hiram M. Garza, Melinda G. Bergeron (Scott); her grandchildren, Raquel Estrada-Smith, Deborah Estrada, Bradley Garza, Ashley Huff, Matthew Garza, Alexandria Garza, Katie G. Theriot, Roman Garza, Holden Garza, Chase Bergeron, and Alyssa Bergeron; 12 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews as well.
She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in May of 1946. She was one of the very few Hispanic teenagers in the school at that time.
As a young woman fluent in Spanish and English, with excellent typing and shorthand skills, she was employed as an Executive Assistant/Secretary. She received many letters of recognition for her clerical skills. After many years as a Federal Civil Service employee, she retired from the San Antonio Air Logistics Center at Kelly Air Force Base. Later she came out of retirement to work for and subsequently retired from, the Guadalupe Community Center.
She spent her free time enjoying her many pets over the years and pushing her grandchildren in their strollers around the neighborhoods when they were smaller. She liked reading the newspaper, magazines and many books. She watched sports as well. Her favorites were the San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Cowboys and the New Orleans Saints. When given the opportunity, she would visit garage sales looking for that “great find.” After her marriage to Frank, they took the opportunity to travel visiting places like Hawaii, New Orleans, and Washington D.C. When they moved to Las Vegas, she learned to play the poker machines and she played them very well. Eating out was always a favorite because she enjoyed good food and people watching. She loved to be surrounded by plants. Having the proverbial “green thumb,” she had many plants not just growing and thriving but coming back to life when someone else thought they were beyond being saved. Her years of being a secretary instilled in her the value of communicating in writing as well as a love for talking on the phone. She would frequently send cards and letters on special occasions to friends and family.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to her caregivers at New Forest Estates Assisted Living and Colonial Gardens Memory Care, and Guiding Light Hospice.
Visitation will be on Monday, May 1st from 6:30-8 pm in the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with a prayer service to happen at 7:00 pm. The Graveside service will be on Tuesday, May 2nd at 9:30 am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
