

Clay was born July 3rd, 1938, in Bexar County to Loida Guajardo and Clay Gruesbeck, Sr. Dr. Gruesbeck spent his childhood in Montemorelos, Nuevo Len, Mexico, where, along with his younger sister, Mildred, he was raised by his maternal grandparents in a home surrounded by cousins and others who considered Clay as an older brothera status he maintained with his relatives throughout life.
Dr. Gruesbeck followed in his father's footsteps, enlisting in the US Army during the Vietnam War as Airborne Infantry. He served two years and 18 days before being honorably discharged as a 1st lieutenant. Clay often said that he became a paratrooper to confront his fear of heights.
After graduating from University of Texas, Austin with a PhD in chemical engineering, Gruesbeck worked as an engineer for Exxon. In his 40s, he completed a Doctor of Medicine at Universidad Autnoma de Tamaulipas. He was the founder and operator of four successful medical clinics in San Antonio, where he and his staff served tens of thousands of patients for many years.
Clay enjoyed studying advanced mathematics, hunting exotic and dangerous game, watching John Wayne movies, binge watching Spanish language telenovelas, and traveling abroad with his wife, Jeanne. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family will miss his sense of humor, his caring words, his thoughtful advice, and encouragement. He was an incredible champion of his loved ones.
Dr. Gruesbeck is survived by his wife, Jeanne Warner Gruesbeck; his sister, Dr. Mildred Gruesbeck Broome of Green Valley, Arizona; his son, Steven Clay Gruesbeck and his wife, Leslie, of Natchitoches, Louisiana; stepchildren, Kaylee Jones and her husband Sean Hussain, and Christopher Jones, all of San Antonio, and his granddaughters, Sophia Clay Gruesbeck, Emma Gregory Gruesbeck, and Scarlet Hussain.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and beloved first cousin, Dr. Eduardo F. Borjon.
