Mr. Claude Norman Roberts, Sr., husband of Alice Roberts, and beloved father passed on January 9, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas at 82 years of age following many years of illness. He is greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Claude was born in Key West, Florida on October 9, 1935. He is preceded in death by his former wife Barbara Ann Scott, father Noll Orion Roberts, mother Constance Elizabeth Ball, brothers David Benjamin Roberts and Albert Nelson Roberts.
Claude graduated from Key West High School in 1953. He worked delivering papers in the city during high school. After graduation, he worked as a printer for the Key West Press before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1954. Claude met Barbara Ann Scott and married in Key West, Florida in 1956. Their marriage was blessed with birth and growth of their five children through September of 1983.
Claude was dedicated to serving the United States of America in the U.S. Air Force. His first overseas tour of duty was at the Sondrestrom AFB in Greenland. During his military career he was also stationed in Texas, Mississippi, Florida, Germany and Turkey. He retired from military service on July 31, 1977 with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant at Randolph AFB. Claude played fast pitch softball and flag football while in the service. He pitched softball until 1993. He enjoyed photography, stained glass design, woodwork and golf in his spare time. He also coached his sons in minor, major and big league divisions of Little League and a daughter in women’s softball.
After he retired from the U.S. Air Force he went to work for La Quinta Motor Inns in San Antonio from August 1977 to April 1987. He moved to California in February 1988 and worked for the State of California Board of Equalization’s Information Management Division in Sacramento beginning July 1, 1988. On July 9, 1997 he retired from the state of California as his last career retirement and returned to San Antonio.
Claude met Alice Pauline Renwick at a ballroom dancing event in San Antonio and then married on October 8, 1999. They spent a jubilant 18 plus years of their marriage together playing golf; attending movies; going on sea cruises; and time with children and grandchildren.
Claude is survived by his very devoted wife Alice Pauline (Renwick) Roberts; five loving children: Deborah Ortiz, Claude Norman Roberts, Jr., Jeanette Diane Arellano, and Mary Christine Conley all of San Antonio, Texas; John Alan Roberts of Round Rock, Texas; two step-daughters: Larinda Rios of San Antonio, Texas and Joelene Wright of Ridgecrest, California; and many adored nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road San Antonio, Texas 78238 with Rev. Joe Walts officiating.
