Clara Joyce Hernandez

Left behind to cherish Joyce's memory is her husband of over 60 years, George S. Hernandez; daughters, Angele Johnson (husband Bruce Johnson), Annette Rose Hernandez, Anne M. Nicasio (husband Frank Nicasio); sons, Gregory Hernandez and Stephen Hernandez (wife Michelle Hernandez); as well as 16 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and more than 70 foster children. Joyce meets in Heaven her mother, Acacia C. Avalos; father, Uvaldo "Walter" Avalos; sisters, Anne Luna and Carmen Avalos; and her brother Gerald Avalos.

Joyce graduated from Stephen F. Austin in Houston, Texas in 1957 and lettered in Archery. As a devoted mother she was involved in Houston Gregg Little League Association and was an assistant Girl Scout Troop leader for many years.

Early in life, Joyce enjoyed many hobbies including dancing, tennis, ping-pong, and archery. An avid outdoors woman, Joyce took pleasure in camping, fishing, and gardening. Joyce also loved to travel, and was a host who loved cooking for her family and friends. In her later years, Joyce enjoyed reading, knitting, listening to her favorite music and the occasional dance (with a good glass of wine).

Joyce had a timeless beauty that was complemented with an unconditional love, care and kindness to others. She will be remembered for her love of sports, her infectious sense of humor and laughter, and her beautiful smile. She was the embodiment of grace, kindness, patience, compassion, and forgiveness. She found peace in praying the rosary and found joy being with the ones she loved.

There will be a private cremation on October 25, 2023 at Sunset Memorial Park, with a reception to follow for friends and family to honor Joyce from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232. A funeral mass will take place Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 2405 Navigation Blvd, Houston, Texas 77003.
