Cheryl was born in San Angelo Texas, on December 19, 1943, to Lawrence Bob Roberts and Evelyn Lucille Straach. Her father was a U.S. Army Air Corp officer stationed at Goodfellow AFB. She moved with her parents to Adak, Alaska; Carswell AFB, Fort Worth; Falls Church, Virginia; and then to Boerne; before moving to San Antonio in 1959. She was a member of the Bluebirds (Campfire Girls), Brownies, Girl Scouts, and Rainbow Girls.
She graduated from Robert E. Lee high school in 1961. After attending the University of Texas in 1962-63, she worked for the Civil Service at Kelly AFB. She married Stanley Martin Plies, an Air Force officer, in 1965. She was stationed with him at Howard AFB in the Panama Canal Zone until 1968, where she worked as a stenographer.
After a brief return to San Antonio. they were stationed at Keesler AFB, Mississippi (1970-74), Clark AFB, Philippines (1974-76), Travis AFB, California (1976-81), and Wiesbaden, West Germany (1981-88).
While stationed at Clark AFB she volunteered to care for Vietnamese orphans who had fled across the South China Sea after the fall of Saigon. In Wiesbaden, she attended classes at satellite campuses of the City Colleges of Chicago and the University of Maryland.
Cheryl returned to San Antonio in 1988, where she studied at UTSA and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Masters Degree in Special Education and Supervision. She then taught special education at Krueger Middle School for three years and at Montgomery Elementary for twelve years.
In 1996, she married her second husband, Roland Haseltine Caldwell, and they lived together on Country Lane, before moving to Oakwell Farms in 2007. She retired from teaching in 2011. The following years she enjoyed gardening, bird watching, painting, Sunday School, traveling, and visiting with friends, family, former classmates, and retired teachers.
Cheryl passed away on January 18, 2016, from complications following a stem cell transplant to treat a bone marrow condition. Cheryl was much loved. Humble and always deeply appreciative of the blessings in her life, her wisdom, spirit of adventure, and gentle manner will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her three children: Jeffrey Brian Plies, Christina Plies Osmer, and Bradley Austin Plies, as well as her six grandchildren: Britton Saylor, Jonathan Neil, Rowyn Berlin, Samuel Martin, Tristan Stewart, and Charles William. She is also survived by her two younger sisters Carol Jean Gordon and Celeste Arlene Roberts.
Cheryl is being laid to rest on Saturday, January30th at Sunset Memorial Park and Funeral Home at 1701 Austin Hwy. Gathering at 1 pm, service at 2 pm.
