Cecil W. Wright entered into rest on January 24, 2021. He was born to Charles and Lois (Meek) Wright on November 19, 1922, in the city of Chattanooga, OK. Cecil joined the United States Army Air Corps in 1942. He was a veteran of World War II, storming the beaches of Normandy as part of Operation Overlord (D-Day plus 2). In his lifetime Cecil was an avid bowler, gardener and coin collector. He served as Chaplain and Post Surgeon of VFW Post 8541 and was a life member of the San Antonio Amateur Softball Association, an elder at Northwood Presbyterian Church and a ham-radio operator (call sign W5 DDH). Cecil retired from the San Antonio Express News and the San Antonio Light after 50 years, where he served as a manager.
Cecil was preceded in death by his mother, Lois, and father, Charles, brother, Therman and sister Ethelda. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Jane Wright; daughter, Dr. Allison Elaine Wright; son, Cecil Wayne Wright and his wife, Debbie; granddaughter, Nicole Erin (Wright) Martin and her husband, Levar; great-grandson, Nixon Oliver Martin; sister Lois Elaine (Wright) Wahl and her husband, Rodger; his faithful companion and “Little Buddy,” Gus; and numerous nieces and nephews. Cecil will be missed by all.
Services will be held at Sunset Funeral Home located on Austin Highway, with visitation starting at 5pm on Monday, February 15th. Masks required. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Northwood Presbyterian Church-Cecil Memorial (518 Pike Rd 78209) or USA Softball of San Antonio (10710 Nacogdoches Rd 78217).
