Carmen P. L. Nuñez, 83, passed away on November 15, 2018. She was born in San Antonio, Texas on April 17, 1935. She enjoyed many facets of life both big and small. She liked spending time drawing, shopping, dancing, travelling, cooking, and socializing with her high school friends and colleagues. She embodied elegance and earned the respect of many in her personal and professional life. She was intelligent with an enormous sense of humor.
Carmen loved her family and was especially concerned for her son. She was always involved with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were her pride and joy and knew her as “Nana”. She would host and entertain all holiday and family gatherings. Her home will always be remembered as the most festive corner of San Antonio.
Carmen was proud of her work at Wilford Hall where she was a Medical Secretary to the Chief of Medicine in the Department of Medicine and General Surgery where she devoted over 20 years of her life. Her position involved extensive knowledge of Air Force training programs for interns, residents and technicians. She loved working there where she developed life-long friendships with many who remained close to her after retirement. She had a unique and cheerful personality even though there were difficult times with ever-changing policies and personnel in health care and especially in a military medical center.
In the face of adversity, whether at work or in her personal life, Carmen would never ask “why me?”, rather she would ask “why not me?” She was a strong and fierce woman from beginning to end.
She is preceded in death by her father, Alberto Ledezma Peña; her mother, Dalia Ledezma Peña; her brother, Albert Peña; her sister, Lupe Telles; her nephew, Rene Zimmerle; and her husband, Ernesto Ruiz Nuñez.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Keller and her husband Kevin Keller; her son, Mario Albert Varela (The Fonz); her grandchildren, Brandy Santee, Joshua Borlinghaus, and Dan Santee; her great-grandchildren, Kendall Santee and Kamryn Santee; her sister, Bertina Peche; her nephew, David Zimmerle; and numerous nieces and nephews.
