She was born on June 7, 1942 in San Antonio, TX to Erwin & Lorine (Steubing) Pape. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister and friend who will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Joe Woodward on October 28, 2001.
She is survived by her three sisters: Ethel May (Pape) Loitz; Thelma Ann “Annie” (Pape) McLaurin Ward and husband Edward; Carole Joy (Pape) and husband Allyn Harrell of Oklahoma, along with many nieces and nephews. She is survived by her three sons; Steve Woodward, and wife Melony; Mark Woodward and wife Laura; Jeff Woodward and wife Lisa. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Jon Woodward and wife Jacqueline; Gregg Sankey and wife Krystin; Amy Sankey; Nicole (Woodward) Ellis and husband Clint; Jessica Woodward; Paula (Woodward) Cochran and husband Brent; Ashley (Woodward) Ferreira and husband Adam; Justin Woodward and wife Emma; Jamie Purdion and husband David. Her pride and joy were her fourteen great-grandchildren: Noah and Jolie Woodward; Cameron Jenks, Jace and Colton Sankey; Grace Elizabeth Erebia; Lillian, Jack, Samuel and Annabelle Ellis; Ean and Luke Cochran; Ben and Baby Ferreira.
Betty grew up on Nacogdoches Road on the then out-skirts of San Antonio surrounded by the Pape family in a German community. In her early years, her mom and dad owned and operated a dance hall on the property. She attended Salado Valley Elementary School on Bitters Road. In 1952 her mom and dad relocated to Fredericksburg, TX. There they owned/operated PAPE Farm Equipment Company (Case/Massey-Harris Dealership). She was baptized at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg along with her father and sisters, Annie & Carole. The family later relocated back to the property on Nacogdoches Road. She was a majorette in middle school and played the clarinet in the North East High School Band. She excelled in Math and was in accelerated classes.
She met Johnnie Joe Woodward on a blind date and they married in December of 1959. Once the three boys were in school, she went to nursing school becoming an LVN. She worked at North East Baptist Hospital; Autumn Winds Nursing Home and Kirkwood Manor Nursing Home during her nursing career.
She and Johnnie Joe loved to travel visiting Germany, Alaska, Canada, France, Hawaii, and Mexico. Favorite trips were to Branson Missouri and Arkansas for fishing trips annually. Betty later expanded her travels to Italy, Spain, other areas of Europe and more of the USA.
The family will be receiving family & friends from 5-7 p.m., Friday, August 16, 2019 at Sunset Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be 9 a.m., Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Jason Ford, St. Paul Evangelical Church, Cibolo, Texas officiating along with music by Brian Parks, pianist, St. Paul Evangelical Church, Cibolo, Texas. Interment will follow immediately at Sunset Memorial Park.
